Upon completion of this module, you should be able to describe what happens at the molecular level when a solution forms and understand the energies that govern the solution process. A solute is a minor component in a solution that we dissolve in the solvent. The solvent is the major component in a solution that we use to dissolve the solute. Solubility is a measure of how much solute will dissolve in a specific solvent at a particular temperature. Solvation is a process in which solvent molecules surround solutes or ions of solute. Solvation is hydration when the solvent is water.
